Dear Fellow Libertarian, The Libertarian Party of Okaloosa County (LPOC) encourages you to attend a meeting of the
Commission Tuesday, 22 January, at 8:30 AM, at the County Offices on Lewis Turner Blvd
(the Taj Mahal). Two Okaloosa County veterinarians, Jenny Fortune and Forrest Townsend, will argue their rights,
principles of free markets, and limited government to the commission. At issue are county laws
that require people to use the Panhandle Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), a private not-for-profit
organization, to register and pay rabies vaccinations for their dogs. Drs Fortune and Townsend
have refused to give PAWS information on their customers so PAWS can then collect rabies
registration fees. PAWS benefits from a relationship with the County that lets them, in effect,
establish county law, enforce that law, levy fines, collect them, and then directly use those
fines. Ordinary veterinarians, who are in business competition with PAWS, are at a severe
business disadvantage to this government sanctioned organization, and due process protection of
individual dog owners are also in question. Drs Fortune and Townsend are currently liable to severe fines and are being threatened with
revocation of their licenses, which would put them out of business. Come out and be a witness for individual rights, free markets and limited government. Come as you are...be part of the solution...
