Mayor Jordan Marlowe Brings Libertarian Principles to Newberry
By Mark Rodriguez
Newberry, Fla.—At a time when people are calling for change in Tallahassee and Washington, D.C., elected Libertarians throughout the country are already bringing that change to their communities.
One such example is Florida’s Jordan Marlowe, now in his second term as Mayor of the City of Newberry. Just during the past five years, Jordan and City Commissioners successfully reduced taxes 20 percent while increasing services. The city also created a program that’s actually returned money to utility customers.
“We’ve managed to just build on the community,” Marlowe says in his quiet demeanor. “You know, ‘Come together as a city, so all things are possible.’ Once you overcome people’s knee-jerk reaction to the word ‘Libertarian,’ they start really looking at the person instead of the party, and yeah, then we can sit, [having] achieved a different level and we can make suggestions about small reductions here, rolling back things there.”
Marlowe is a fourth-generation native of Newberry where he and wife Lauren live with their two children, Emma Jane, 10, and Logan, 8. Marlowe’s “day job” is a popular teacher at Newberry High School where he offers classes in English, History, Government, and Economics. That mix grants him “a pretty diverse perspective, I guess of the world, and that’s pretty cool.”
As Mayor, he quickly quelled any misconceptions Newberry residents and business owners had about Libertarians with his leadership and composure. Working with other commissioners and city officials, Marlowe sought to improve the lives of constituents and return unneeded municipal funds to their pockets. In addition to tax cuts, Marlowe successfully created and established the Utility Deposit Refund Program.
“If you have good credit after a year of being with us whether you’re a resident or business, we give you your deposit back,” Marlowe explains. “That immediately put about $50,000 back into our residents’ pockets because it was money just sitting in our bank. Before, when you closed your account and left, you were entitled to it back. For some larger businesses, that utility deposit was $50,000 to $100,000, two to three months’ worth of their average utility bill. That’s a lot of cash just sitting in limbo that we wanted to make sure they had back.”
Marlowe was at the forefront of his community’s calls for justice, taking part in marches and calls for a better nation. He recently helped organize and host the Newberry High School Graduation Ceremony for the Class of 2020.
By streamlining city operations, giving money back to the citizens and giving his energy back to the community, Marlowe exemplifies Libertarian principles.
Jordan Marlowe’s Newberry not only still stands, but is prospering, and is an example of what can be accomplished when people work together. It is an example that Libertarians can lead, and be good stewards of their communities.

LPF Chairman Steven Nekhaila on the state of the Party
As we continue to navigate the waters of Covid-19, government lockdowns, social unrest, and economic recession, we find ourselves in an unprecedented and opportunistically unique era. With these challenges come opportunities for Libertarians to shine and provide solutions amidst the chaos. Presidential candidate Jo Jorgensen has ignited a fire of liberty with her passionate, yet calm and grounded vision of a country influenced by libertarianism. Our Vice-Presidential Candidate Spike Cohen is curing voter apathy with empowerment, principle, and influence—the perfect complement to our Presidential nominee. Together, they are making a charge for the White House and seeking to spark the message of liberty in the hearts and minds of constituents nationwide, and even worldwide!
With these challenges, we are presented with opportunities. Several newscasts featured the Libertarian Party of Florida’s position on the coronavirus government-lockdowns across the State. We supported protesters to stand for their rights and demand their jobs. We demanded Monroe County end its self-imposed siege and lift unconstitutional roadblocks so the Conch Republic economy can restart. We saw county affiliates across Florida support activists championing civil rights and peacefully protesting the death of George Floyd due to unchecked and militarized policing.
While 2020 is not a good year for many of us, we become stronger through the challenges of tumultuous and difficult times! Not unlike a body-builder working out to break down muscle tissue to ultimately make themselves stronger, the LPF works harder to become stronger in the face of resistance. We are qualifying candidates to run in local partisan and nonpartisan elections, building more county affiliates, and working to grow essential party infrastructure as we carefully map the road to a future better equipped for the days ahead. We are doing well financially, thanks to our supporters! Many of our volunteers are taking advantage of the extra down time to serve, and our candidates are gearing up to take advantage of the weakened duopoly presence.
I am confident and excited in the work we are doing. The LPF stands as the premiere political presence for liberty-minded individuals in the State of Florida. We do not falter in our message, instead we only speak our beliefs louder because we know we are on the right side of history.
While most political organizations buckle to the waves of populism and dilute their message, we let principle guide our rudder. As we focus on the 2020 election year, we ask our supporters to dig deep and support the Party’s efforts. Your financial support, time, and involvement give us the inspiration to continue working hard to deliver a world set free in our lifetimes.
Stay safe and continue fighting for what is right!
