It took me some time to process the shocking and gruesome assassination of Charlie Kirk and to find the right words to convey my feelings. After watching social media and mainstream coverage over the past week since his death, I finally feel ready to share my thoughts.

Charlie did not deserve to be assassinated. As Libertarians, we reject the use of force to achieve political goals. Violence is never the answer, unless it’s in self-defense or protecting others from violence. This senseless act has stolen a man from his family, leaving a wife without her husband and his young children without their father.

Libertarians condemn this assassination without reservation. We extend our prayers, well wishes, and hopes for healing to Charlie’s family and loved ones, as well as his countless fans all over the world. If one thing is crystal clear to me now, it’s that Charlie touched many lives for the better.

It is never acceptable to use force against someone for exercising their freedom of speech. Charlie was speaking his mind, a right we must all be able to exercise without fear of violence. He was a staunch supporter of the First Amendment and often championed values that overlap with libertarians. As we see political leaders like Pam Bondi and Donald Trump suddenly praising hate speech laws, it is important to remember that Charlie stood firmly against such restrictions and consistently defended the principle of free expression.

I hope this tragedy reminds us of two important truths. First, words and beliefs are powerful enough to inspire people to live, fight, and even die for them. Second, we must remain steadfast in protecting free expression, even when we disagree. None of us should ever face the threat of death for voicing our convictions.

Rest in peace, Charlie Kirk. May your family find strength and healing during this painful time.
